The Apostle Peter stated that we were given the word of God by holy men of old, who were ordained and sent by God, and moved by the Holy Spirit to write down all things given them by God to write. This is evident in their writings throughout, in the usage of signs and symbols, and in the consistency and continuity of the message. Even though there are hundreds of years between the times of some of the writers, every book remains in perfect harmony.
Furthermore, being that so many prophecies have already been fulfilled since the time of their writing, we can have confidence that the remaining few will likewise come to pass.
The letters of the Hebrew alphabet also have numeral values, and throughout the Bible, we often find that certain numbers appear in a unique manner repeatedly, giving each number its own particular significance and meaning. One number used prolifically throughout the Bible to communicate a specific meaning is the number seven.
Often used to signify perfection, completion, and rest, we first find the number seven used in Genesis chapter one. When God finishes creation after completing man on the sixth day, he declares all his work very good, and ceasing from all his work, he rests on the seventh day, sanctifying and setting the seventh day apart from the other six days, making it holy unto the Lord. This was done in a figure to create a picture of more things to come in the same manner.
In regards to the seventh day. in chapter 4 of the book of Hebrews, we find that we are also given a promise of entering into the Lordโs rest, which is the Sabbath. This is indeed a great mystery regarding the seven days of creation, for man was created on the sixth day, the last day before the Sabbath.
Throughout the Bible, the number six is used to signify man, for man was created on the sixth day, and later, after sin entered the world, he was given six days to do all his labor, with the commandment to rest on the seventh. The seventh day belongs to God alone. It is the Lordโs Day that he sanctified and set aside for himself as holy.
However, it is the will of God that some of those who labor in the world also enter into his holy Sabbath with him. The Sabbath is a symbol of the rest promised to us by God if we complete our labors in righteousness and enter his perfection. We are told to labor to enter into his rest, but it will only be fully attained when we cease from all of our works and are made perfect upon our entrance into the Seventh Day.
Thus, as six represents man, seven represents the completion of man into the perfect man. In this, we are given Enoch as an example, who was the seventh man from Adam. Genesis 5:24 states,
โAnd Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.โ
The book of Hebrews expounds further upon Enochโs departure, stating:
โBy faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.โ (Hebrews 11:5)
The sign of Enoch is given so that those who seek perfection may have hope and continue on in their labors until the time they are also taken.
Later, David, the seventh son of Jesse, was also chosen as a representative of the same figure when Samuel was sent to the house of Jesse to anoint one of his sons king.
One by one, Davidโs six elder brothers were passed overโof whom it was said, โThe Lord has not chosen these.โ Samuel then sent to fetch Jesseโs seventh son, David, who was not then present; and when he came, the Lord said, โArise, anoint him, for this is he.โ David had been skipped over when Samuel came to anoint one of Jesseโs sons king because, being a youth, he was lightly esteemed and not even thought of as a consideration. But God sees not as man sees; for God looks upon the heart.
And again, in another illustration given to us, when the Lord gave manna to the children of Israel in the wilderness, he commanded them to gather the manna for six days and rest on the seventh. When the people came to Jesus asking for him to give them manna, he told them, โI am the bread of life; he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.โ Nevertheless, many were offended by him, looking for worldly satisfaction rather than spiritual fulfillment.
Jesus provides those who seek heavenly things nourishment during their pilgrimage through the desert, and upon coming into the Sabbath, he is the Sabbatical Rest of God. As he said, โCome unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.โ
The literal meaning of the word โweekโ is seven, it is used biblically for grouping any units of time into groups of seven. Jesus, being both the Son of God and the Son of Man, fulfills the whole weekโhe both labored on earth as a man and was resurrected as the Son of God into heaven.
Thus, in Christ, the six days of laboring into rest and the Sabbath are both fulfilled and complete in the sevenfold Spirit of the Lord. โTake my yoke upon you (labor), and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heartโโโand ye shall find rest (sabbath) unto your souls.
Six days of labor represent our striving towards the perfection of seven in the fullness of Christ. If we refuse to labor, once our lives have expired, it is too late. On the seventh day, the children of God are gathered and sealed into eternity. It is the Sabbath and all work is completed. The children of God are perfected in Christ, but for all who refused, it is no longer possible to change the sinful nature of their hearts.
Therefore, the scripture says, โBe ye angry and sin not; let not the sun go down on your wrath.โ For the sixth day ends and Sabbath begins with the sun setting, therefore, in the present day, fight temptation with vengeance, resist the Devil, and he will flee from you.
Christ is the true rest, not merely a figure of true. Christ is the Sabbath, the Seventh Day; Christ is the completion and the fullness of the sevenfold spirit of Godโhe is the Perfect Man and the Promised Land of Rest, that through him we must obtain by conquering any other inhabitants that would fight to reside in usโโBehold, the kingdom of God is within you.โ (Luke 17:21). The kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.
God finished his work on the sixth day and rested on the seventh day. So we also are to cease from our own works, passing through and beyond the sixth day (the day of man) into the fullness of the week, the completion, the day of Christโthe Sabbath. Christ is the SabbathโโRemember the Sabbath to keep it holy.โ Walk in Christ, and you are holy.
